Portmarnock AFC Win Leinster Junior Cup Final

Portmarnock 2 – 1 Trinity Corinthians (AET)

Portmarnock AFC became Leinster Junior Cup winners for the first time in the club’s history on Sunday, May 22, 2005 beating Trinity Corinthians after extra time in the final at Gannon Park, Malahide, Co. Dublin.

Goals from Barry Flynn and substitute Declan Hardy were enough to see off a very determined challenge from United Churches League side Trinity Corinthians. Portmarnock had to survive strong pressure from Trinity Corinthians in the early minutes of the game before asserting control of possession in midfield during a very competitive first half. Former Junior international Adrian McDonald almost gave Portmarnock the lead with a powerful strike which had to be tipped over the bar by the Trinity goalkeeper. Later in the half current Junior international Barry Flynn had to clear the ball off his side’s goal line to prevent Trinity taking the lead. Indeed it was Flynn who achieved a breakthrough for Portmarnock just before half time when he rose to meet a Craig Bolton cross just before half time to put his side into the lead.

Early in the second half a poor clearance by the Portmarnock defence almost led to an equaliser but the Trinity striker’s shot was saved. Portmarnock came close to increasing their lead on a couple of occasions before Trinity hit back. With less than then a few minutes to go Portmarnock failed to clear a Trinity attack and when the ball fell to Ian Kelleher he hit the top corner of the goal with a terrific strike to equalise. Mark Revins almost snatched a winner for Portmarnock just before the end when he headed wide but the game went into extra time.

Both sides went all out to win the game during the first half of extra time but it was Portmarnock who got the vital winning goal. A great cross from Paul Duffy was expertly headed home by Portmarnock’s Declan Hardy. Portmarnock retained the upper hand during the second half of extra time to hold out and become winners of the trophy for the first time.

Record Junior international cap holder Barry Flynn was named Man of the Match. Portmarnock captain Declan Dolan paid tribute to a great performance by opponents Trinity Corinthians before the lifting the Cup for Portmarnock.

Portmarnock 1 – 2 Leicester Celtic

Portmarnock’s Under 18 Premier Dublin & District Schoolboy League team were unlucky to lose in the final of the Christopher Cup on Sunday against Leicester Celtic at the Athletic Union League grounds near Dublin Airport.

Portmarnock found themselves two goals down in a hectic opening half hour but rallied towards the end of the half with a goal from striker Simon Cash.

Portmarnock put their opponents under severe pressure during the second half in a bid to score an equaliser but Leicester Celtic held out to take the Cup.

"We dominated the second half but we just couldn’t score," said Diarmuid O’Connor, Assistant Manager with the Portmarnock side.

This Portmarnock team also recently reached the semi-final of the LFA Cup only to lose out to Sheriff. The Premier league side battled well to reach a Cup final and a semi-final and can look back on a season of progress.

"We’ve had a very good season. The lads have shown great commitment and can feel proud of their endeavours," said Dermot who is assistant to Team Manager David Roe.
