Match Report: Under 8C1

FINAL DATE FOR U8’S

The Under 8C1 team have reached the final of the Future Print shield with a hard fought win over Swords Celtic in Swords last Saturday. Portmarnock started strongly against the wind and their measured passing looked like paying dividends from the outset with a few chances being wasted early on. Portmarnock were unlucky to go behind with swords taking the lead direct from a corner with the wind playing a big role in the freak goal. This only led to spur the lads on and they lifted their game and scored two goals in quick succession. Osian Dullaghan with a super 25 yard strike giving the keeper no chance with the first and Luke Chautanauex mazy run beating all of five swords celtic defenders and a cool finish from tens yards. This looked like finishing the action of the first half but Swords had a surprise waiting and practically with the last kick of the first half, again from a corner, Swords equalised with an excellent strike leaving Stephen Byrne no chance in goal.

So to the second half and with a really strong wind in Portmarnock’s favour few believed we wouldn’t go on and win it by a few goals especially with the fresh legs of Patrick Eccles in defence, Adam Rafter in midfield controlling things and the busy Adam Gaynor up front making life uneasy for the Swords defence, but as we all know football generally doesn’t follow the script and Swords playing really well in the second half making Portmarnock work for even the smallest of chances and even then the Swords keeper was pulling off superb save after save to thwart Adam Gaynor first quickly followed by shots from Oisian and Luke. Swords still looked dangerous on the break but Conor Day was having a superb game in defense with goalkeeper Stephen Byrnes confidence in goal transmitting to the rest of the team. A stalemate in the second half ensued and so the final whistle went and extra time was upon us.

Portmarnock again started strongly and with the management making a few astute changes in bringing back on the lads rested from the second half we started to take a strangle hold of the game. A fine passing move led to Luke Chatanuaex being taken down outside the box, he bravely got up dusted himself down and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the Swords keeper (if there had of been six keepers in they wouldn’t of stopped it). Much celebrations ensued but calls from Conor Day to "focus" soon got the lads feet back on the ground. A tremendous defensive display from Catalin Ciocan made sure Swords were getting little in the way of go forward ball. Aaron McCormack sat in front of the back four controlling the game a spreading the ball wide to his wingers and Andrew Knuckles was looking dangerous every time he got the ball up front with his dribbling ability and his cultured left foot. Portmarnock were able to close out a very hard fought game and beat a team from a league above them for a famous victory (as in famous for anyone involved with the team).

GOOD LUCK TO THE LADS IN THE FINAL in may at Lansdowne Road (if stadium is not finished by this date the match may be moved to the new NDSL grounds on the Oscar Traynor Road).

First Silverware for Portmarnock AFC 2007/2008

Portmarnock AFC Under 12 squad have secured the first bit of silver for the season.

Our players have been participating in an FAI/Fingal Futsol invitational league tournament for the past 10 weeks in the Oscar Traynor Centre Coolock.

The invitation came from organisers Denis Hyland (FAI CDO) and Sharon Boyle (FAI CDO) both who put a lot of time and effort into the tournament and compliments to both of them and the referee Mark Whelan who explained the rules and refereed all games throughout the tournament.

The format was eight teams competing in two leagues leaving the top two teams in each group through to playing the semi–final and final on Monday 31st March. Portmarnock’s semi–final match was against St Malachy’s which went as planned, our lads progressing to the final on a score line of 5–2. The final was to prove an interesting challenge, Howth Celtic were to provide the opposition, with players from both camps very familiar with each other as Howth also compete in the same league in the DDSL as our lads it was what could be called a local derby.

Howth Celtic performed very well throughout the tournament and would have been one of the favourites for the title along with Portmarnock.

The lads went on too win the final 3–1.

The coaching staff of the under 12s would like to add the following very IMPORTANT statement…

"These young lads were not given any instructions from the sideline, where not instructed on team formations and or substitutions, they were however asked to got out and express yourselves, "USE YOUR OWN SKILLS". And on that merit we have too applaud these young men, they won this tournament by themselves."

Pictured at the presentation was Conan Byrne (team member Sporting Fingal), Ian Murray (Coach) who offered assistance to the lads for lifts to and from venue.

Well done the Under 12s
